ANALYSIS
Anderson still has a long way to go in his return from his latest shoulder surgery. The likely scenario for him at this point is to make the majors in a relief role.

Anderson's major league prospects are on life support after he missed the last four seasons because of various arm injuries. The lure of a 6-foot-10 lefty hurling upper-90s fastballs has been enough for the Mariners to keep him around, but sooner or later they'll have to cut their losses. That could come this season if his arm doesn't hold up. The latest plan is possibly to convert him to a reliever, thereby reducing the wear and tear on his arm. Another injury, though, and Anderson is finished.
Anderson missed a third year to shoulder surgery in 2003. Make that two labrum tears and rotator cuff surgery in three years. That's not too enticing of a background to pin your roto farm system's hopes to. The Mariners still are optimistic he can rebound. If he does well in the minors this season, he might have a shot at the rotation in 2005. At 6-foot-10, Anderson is hard to write off, but one more injury and he is likely done.
Anderson is 6-foot-10. OK, now to the bad stuff. He tore a labrum in his left shoulder and missed 2001. Then he re-tore his labrum in his left shoulder and missed 2002. For someone who shows a lot of promise, let's hope the third year is the charm, but he won't likely throw again until a couple months into the regular season.
