Predictably, Drese fell back to earth in 2005, as his control of the strike zone slipped. On a team with an airtight infield defense he might produce useful numbers again someday, but Washington doesn't look like that team.
Drese posted an astonishing 3.26 ERA in 107.2 innings in Arlington in 2004. It's going to be damn tough to reproduce that home ERA with poor K/BB and K/IP ratios, however. His numbers after the All-Star break (4.72 ERA, 1.60 WHIP) paint a better picture of the real Drese. He's a league-average starter in a tough pitching environment. Don't get fooled.
Drese's K:9 and K:BB rate have plummeted, to the point where he's basically, ironically enough, Aaron Myette. If only the Travis Hafner/Einar Diaz part of the trade could end up a wash from Texas' vantage point.
Drese won a rotation spot with a good spring, but was tagged pretty regularly all year (including a ghastly 8.85 ERA in nine starts after the All-Star break where he allowed 70 hits in 39.2 innings). He was demoted in mid-August and had a few solid starts at Triple-A. Traded to Texas, he'll get a crack in spring training at a rotation spot. There's a decent K/9 rate hidden amongst his totals for the year, so that offers some hope.
