2025 Fantasy Outlook
Tovar laughed in the face of the sophomore slump theory and had a very productive 2024 season, albeit with some flaws. Tovar once again played nearly every day, but set new career highs in all run producing categories while also elevating his batting average. He was not as much of a help in OBP leagues, as his .295 OBP was a direct result of an anemic 3.3 percent walk rate. It is one thing when Judge or Schwarber strike out 200 times because they're hitting 45-plus homers while also walking 125-plus times in a season. Tovar hit 26 homers while striking out 200 times and walked 23 times all season. We have seen 21 instances of a player strike out at least 200 times in a season, and Tovar has the lowest walk total in that group. Tovar's home/road splits were surprisingly close to neutral, especially for a Colorado hitter, as his homers were evenly split, while the batting average was a difference of 16 points. Tovar will be there to volume his way through production again for Colorado, but managers and fans should expect a step, or even two steps, back rather than a step forward. Read Past Outlooks

Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said Thursday that the team is close to scheduling Tovar's (oblique) rehab assignment, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
Tovar ran the bases Thursday and has previously hit off a tee as he ramps up baseball activities. He has not yet resumed taking batting practice and will need to show he can hit pain-free before being cleared for a rehab assignment, but it sound like that should come soon. Tovar has been sidelined since early June with a strained left oblique.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
There are players who are better real baseball players than fantasy ones while there are others who are more meaningful in fantasy than real baseball. Tovar falls into the latter as he finished the season as the 15th best shortstop with 15 homers, 70+ runs and RBIs and 11 steals. His .253 batting average was slightly above the league average, but his 70 wRC+ shows what his real baseball offensive value was. Tovar did what most Rockies do: rake at home (.276) and struggle on the road (.229) but did nearly evenly split his homers. His handedness splits were nearly dead even in his rookie season, but it doesn't matter as his excellent defense keeps him in the lineup every day. Truth be told, this was an excellent rookie season for a 21 year old with just 23 plate appearances above Double-A before making his big league debut. He must improve his suspect plate discipline to keep the sophomore slump concerns at bay.
Tovar has only played nine games in the majors and five games at Triple-A, but the Rockies have been invested in him as their shortstop of the future since they bought him a house in 2020 when he couldn't return home to Venezuela during the pandemic. He had impressed at times in the minors prior to last season, most notably logging a 119 wRC+ as a 19-year-old at Single-A in 2021, but 2022 was certainly his breakout campaign. Tovar hit .318/.386/.545 with 13 home runs, 17 steals on 20 attempts and a 64:25 K:BB in 66 games as one of the youngest players at Double-A. Hip and groin injuries sidelined Tovar from late-June until mid-September, when he returned and went directly to Triple-A for a week before spending the final two weeks of the year with the big club. An over-aggressive approach has been the one offensive knock on Tovar, but so far he has mostly made it work. There's a chance he goes through a significant adjustment period against MLB pitching as a 21-year-old, but it seems pretty clear the Rockies will give him every opportunity in spring training to break camp as the starting shortstop. Tovar isn't a burner (57th percentile sprint speed) and doesn't hit the ball very hard (22.5 Hard% in the minors, 106 mph max EV in the majors), but he has been productive in games while being extremely young for most of his minor-league levels.
The Rockies have pushed Tovar aggressively at every turn, culminating with his big-league debut in September. He is the team's shortstop of the present and future after a breakout campaign in which he hit .316/.387/.540 with 14 home runs and 17 steals in 71 games between Double-A and Triple-A. Tovar turned 21 in August, so while there may be growing pains initially in the majors, he could still be improving as a hitter.
