2018 Fantasy Outlook
Ruiz hung around for another year as a veteran backstop for the Mariners last season, posting a 0.5 fWAR as a 38-year-old in 145 plate appearances. That half-win was earned primarily through respectable defense, which does not help fantasy owners. His .216/.313/.352 line is acceptable for a backup catcher, but it is hardly a fantasy asset. At his age, it's easy to see him retiring -- he may not have the desire to compete for a job in camp. Even if he sticks around for a 13th MLB season, Ruiz is unlikely to regain relevance unless you play in a league which has found a way to give points for veteran leadership and managing a pitching staff.
