RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Josh Spence.
Spence spent the majority of his 2012 season between Triple-A Tucson and the majors and did not find much success at either spot. The main flaw in Spence's game is his inability to limit walks to opposing batters. In 2011, he had the same problem as he walked 15.5 percent of the batters he faced in the majors. In the offseason, he was designated for assignment by the Padres and claimed off waivers by the Yankees. Expect Spence to spend the majority of the 2013 season in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as he attempts to improve his control, while his time in New York will likely be spent as a LOOGY.
Just one year removed from the Padres' Rookie League, Spence, a 23-year-old lefty out of Australia, made 40 appearances out of the bullpen in 2011 and posted a 2.73 ERA with a 1.61 K/BB. As he continues to gain experience and works on his control, he should reduce the walks and possibly become the team's top lefty specialist in 2012.
