Chavez has signed a minor league contract with the Royals.
ANALYSIS
Chavez suited up for just 24 games last season, cobbling together a weak .206/.306/.270 line at the Double-A level. He's probably looking at a repeat campaign at the same level with his new organization.

Chavez enjoyed a breakout season in 2010 but his wilting last season suggests his big year was simply a product of the hitter-friendly California League. At High-A High-Desert two years ago, Chavez stroked 69 extra-base hits with a .964 OPS while hitting .315. Those numbers tumbled off the board last season at Double-A Jackson as Chavez had just 33 extra-base hits, a .672 OPS and a .216 average. Chavez's plate discipline continues to be a problem (49:124 BB:K) and his base running his poor, too. In his four-year minor league career, Chavez has been caught stealing 29 times in 60 attempts. He's only 23, and the Mariners like him enough to keep him on the 40-man roster, but he needs to make significant strides this season.
Acquired in the Brandon Morrow deal with Toronto, Chavez quietly put together a big season for the Mariners at High-A High Desert last year. He showed great power with 32 homers and 30 doubles, posting a .964 OPS. His plate discipline tells another story, however, as he registered 131 strikeouts to 52 walks in 136 games. Time is on Chavez's side as he's only 22, but it remains to be seen if his power numbers at the High Desert launching pad will carry to the next level. The Mariners thought enough of him, though, to add him to the 40-man roster this offseason.
