RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2018

Subscribe now to see our 2018 outlook.

2017

Rupp worked he on his swing path last offseason, and he started hitting the ball with more authority, leading all hitters in exit velocity in early May, and he started hitting more of his flyballs out of the park. While Rupp's average exit velocity tailed off a bit, he still finished the season squarely among many of baseball's better hitters in that column. There is the potential for increased power output from Rupp if he can reverse the increase he saw in his groundball rate last season. Even with minimal change to his batted-ball profile, we should see more homers from Rupp this season as he is likely to earn more than the 389 at-bats he had in 2016. The primary concerns for Rupp's playing time are questions about his game calling and pitch framing, along with the presence of prospects Jorge Alfaro and Andrew Knapp. However, Rupp's bat is likely going to keep him in the lineup more often than not.

2016

Rupp opened last season as the backup to Carlos Ruiz, but by June, he had started to secure the majority of the at-bats thanks to Ruiz's struggles at the plate. Things really picked up for Rupp in August when he hit seven of his nine home runs and posted a 1.086 OPS in 66 plate appearances. While the home runs did come all at once, the power is fairly legitimate as Rupp has hit double-digit home runs in the minors. His batting average may continue to suffer as he struggles against righties. He may ultimately settle into a platoon role with one of the Phillies' younger catching prospects when they are ready for the majors, but Rupp figures to see the majority of at-bats behind the dish in 2016.

2015

Rupp hit just .165/.256/.299 with six home runs at Triple-A Lehigh Valley last season. It was a big step back after a solid performance at the same level in 2013. His biggest issue last season was the jump in his strikeout rate from 28 percent to 35 percent, though a .232 BABIP also aided in depressing his numbers. He did see time with the Phillies in the middle of the season when injuries to both of the team's catchers required them to dip into the minors, and he also got another look when rosters expanded in September. Rupp is good enough defensively that he should be able to hold down a backup job in the majors, but his bat will likely prevent him from ever being a starter. The Phillies may decide to have him back up Carlos Ruiz this season rather than bring in a veteran now that the team is undergoing a rebuild.

2014

Rupp was a third-round pick in the 2010 draft out of the University of Texas. Though never hyped up as much of a prospect, he steadily worked his way through the Phillies' farm system, earning rave reviews for his defensive skills. He does not have a great offensive game, but Rupp has shown decent pop during his four years in the minors. He is probably not going to hit enough to be anything more than a major league backup throughout his career. There was some thought that Rupp might compete for an Opening Day roster spot in spring training before the Phillies signed Wil Nieves, but now he is more likely to start the season at Triple-A to provide the team with insurance against injuries.
