Added to player pool
Rupp was added to Cleveland's roster pool Monday.
ANALYSIS
Rupp joined the team on a minor-league deal back in February but wasn't part of the team's player pool throughout summer camp. He'll report to Cleveland's alternate training site and will give the organization added depth behind the plate with Roberto Perez out with a shoulder strain.

Paying up for a top-three catcher looks very appealing as Derek VanRiper breaks down his catcher rankings by tier.

Todd Zola continues his look at playing time battles with the NL East and thinks Noah Syndergaard's health and performance will be one of the biggest questions to answer heading into 2018.
Scooter Gennett has been solid against right-handed pitching this season, and he has a good opportunity to keep it going Sunday against the Pirates' Gerrit Cole.
Todd Zola digs even deeper into September rosters looking for every scrap of value, and thinks Rio Ruiz's platoon role at third base for Atlanta could provide a modest power boost for fantasy rosters.

Through parts of five seasons in Philadelphia, Rupp never looked the part of a starting catcher, but it was something of a surprise for him to not latch on anywhere as a backup. Despite a career .234/.298/.407 line (certainly not good, but in line with typical backup catcher numbers), all he managed to do was kick around in Triple-A with the Rangers, Twins and Mariners, hitting .223/.320/.425 over 86 games. Rupp will enter 2019 fighting for a backup job with the Giants. Being Buster Posey's backup isn't actually a bad gig, as the perennial All-Star has actually caught fewer than 100 games in each of the last two seasons. On the other hand, the Giants appear to be rebuilding, which may give the edge to a younger option. Any at-bats he does get will be less valuable due to the Giants' tough home stadium. If he earns a run of playing time, he has enough power to be considered as a deep-league fill-in, but he's not worth targeting at draft time.
