Lucas was released from his minor league contract with the Mariners on Tuesday, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.
ANALYSIS
A poor start for Lucas down at Triple-A Tacoma (.224/.259/.396) and Dae-ho Lee's emergence as a viable platoon bat effectively eliminated any chance Lucas had to reach Seattle. He will look to catch on elsewhere, but the 33-year-old will be hard pressed to receive another major league opportunity.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2011
Lucas continued to provide value at the dish against left-handed pitching during his 2014 season, slashing .329/.388/.411 in 73 at-bats versus southpaws, but struggled to find much traction against right-handed pitching while making starts all over the diamond in a backup role. He heads to Texas for his age-33 season where he will compete for a bench spot in the spring. Lucas lacks any significant signs of power or speed and will continue to be a limited offensive contributor even if he can work his way into a utility role.
As a 31-year-old rookie in 2013, Lucas did work against left-handed pitching, posting a .883 OPS versus southpaws over 106 at-bats. He struggled to sustain production against right-handed pitching, however, slashing at a poor .224/.261/.544 clip with just one home run in 245 at-bats. Lucas caught fire down the stretch -- batting .321 in his final 22 games while seeing time all over the infield -- leaving a positive impression on the front office as the season came to a close. The lack of experience and depth in the Marlins' infield is a boon to Lucas' chances of making the Opening Day roster, but he's best suited for a platoon/reserve role in which his exposure against right-handed pitching can be limited.
He'll be 29 next season, but did post a .878 OPS at Triple-A Omaha with the Royals last season. He'll likely just add depth at Triple-A, but there's a chance he could be a late bloomer. He'll compete for a utility role this spring.
