Sasaki has officially retired from professional baseball, the Japan Times reports.
ANALYSIS
In his farewell game on August 9 in Japan, the ex-Mariners closer came on with two out in the second inning to face one batter, Kazuhiro Kiyohara, Sasaki's rival since high school. Take Sasaki off your draft lists; he returned to Japan in the offseason to be closer to his family, and he then signed a two-year deal with Yokohama in February 2004.
Sasaki may be the wild card for the entire Mariners' season. He blew eight saves last season and it was determined that the reason was because he had bone chips in his right elbow. He had surgery performed in early November and is expected to be ready for spring training. But let's remember his season wasn't a huge bust as he still had 37 saves, ranking him among the elite closers in the majors.
