The Astros offered Rule 5 pick Palmisano back to the Brewers, but Milwaukee declined the offer, and Palmisano will be assigned to Triple-A Round Rock, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Brewers are stacked at catcher in their minor league system, so it appears that they just preferred the $50,000 in Rule 5 compensation. The Astros didn't have a need for Palmisano at the major league level due to the recent signing of Ivan Rodriguez, and he'll have to compete with J.R. Towles and tenth overall pick Jason Castro to earn playing time at the big league level over the next couple seasons.

Palmisano had a terrific first half in 2007 but fell hard in the second half and ended with a .256/.368/.419 line. His biggest assets are his defense and ability to get on base. He profiles as a backup catcher if he makes it to the majors.
Palmisano had a dismal season in 2005, hitting .255 with a .309 OBP for high-A Brevard County. He's still the best catching prospect in the Milwaukee farm system, but don't expect him to make the majors any time soon.
Palmisano had a solid season at low Single-A Beloit, but the Brewers were hoping for a little bit more. He's still the top catching prospect in the Brewers minor league system. He hit .293 with a respectable .371 OBP but only hit seven HR and 22 doubles. He also needs to progress behind the plate before he can be considered for a major league job. Palmisano may begin the season at high Single-A, but it's more likely that he'll jump to Double-A for 2005.
