Transitions to coaching career

The Royals named Conrad the manager for their rookie-level affiliate at Burlington, effectively ending his playing career, Rustin Dodd of The Kansas City Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Conrad hadn't surfaced in the majors since 2014, when he made 34 plate appearances for the Padres, but he had been kicking around the minor-league and independent ranks in recent years before sitting out in 2017. Set to turn 38 years old later this month, Conrad was unlikely to garner much interest in affiliated ball, so he opted to call it a career and transition to the coaching ranks. Over 293 career games in the majors with the Athletics, Braves, Brewers, Rays and Padres, Conrad slashed .200/.271/.389 with 19 home runs and 73 RBI.

Conrad hit just .223 with a .713 OPS last season in a utility role. He's shown good power in the minors and draws walks at a decent clip, so there's some upside if he finds regular playing time. However, he may spend much of the season at Triple-A Nashville if he doesn't win a utility role with the Brewers this spring.
Conrad had big impact on the Braves last season with several game-winning hits, but also had several key errors in the playoffs. He's not as much a fantasy factor since he's a utility player who mostly pinch hits. He's shown good power in the minors and draws walks at a decent clip, so there's some upside if he finds regular playing time. However, the playoffs showed he likely doesn't have the glove for regular duty.
Conrad isn't regarded as much of a prospect at age 30 and he was only called up last season due to a rash of injuries. However, he's shown good power in the minors and draws walks at a decent clip, so there's some upside if he finds regular playing time. However, he's more likely to spend most of his season in Triple-A.
Conrad has more power than the average middle infielder, as he hit .267/.334/.534 with 24 homers, 40 doubles and 94 RBI. He will likely start the year at Triple-A, and appears to be the front-runner to succeed Craig Biggio at second base in 2008.
