RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2017

There was no outlook written for Jean Machi.

2016

Machi split time between the San Francisco and Boston organizations in 2015. In the never-ending testament to the unpredictable nature of relievers, Machi, coming off two nice seasons with the Giants, imploded in 2015 and was released in July after posting a 5.14 ERA and a second straight year of a diminished strikeout rate. The Red Sox, desperate for bullpen arms, claimed him and immediately put him to work in late-inning situations. He didnít fare much better in Boston, but was part of a committee of relievers to pick up save opportunities when Koji Uehara suffered a season-ending forearm injury. With Boston, Machi had a 5.09 ERA and four saves in 26 games. The split-fingered fastball that worked so well for Machi in 2013 and 2014 has become less effective, which contributed to the poor 2015 numbers. He signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in the offseason and will try to win a bullpen role this spring.

2015

On the surface, Machi repeated his surprisingly-productive 2013 campaign during his second year with the Giants, but a closer look reveals that there is cause for concern. First and foremost, his strikeout rate slipped from 24.2% in 2013 to 20.5% (6.9 K/9) last season. His BABIP also tumbled from .301 in 2013 to .230 last season, and his career mark (.261) suggests a correction is forthcoming. All told, his xFIP (3.37) is a better baseline expectation for those seeking to benefit from Machi's ability to rack up holds (17), and there's little reason to expect any reliever to rack up as many wins as Machi did a season ago when he managed to receive credit for seven wins Ė- the same total as Jeff Samardzija, Francisco Liriano and Jake Peavy.

2014

Machi was impressive in his first full year in the majors, posting a 2.38 ERA in 53 innings with the Giants. He is a hard-throwing righty who relies primarily on his two-seamer (51.7% usage) and his split-finger fastball (36.7% usage) while occasionally mixing in a slider (11.6% usage). The Giants let middle-reliever Sandy Rosario walk this offseason, all but ensuring Machi a bullpen spot in 2014, but he seems likely to land in a low-leverage role.

2013

After 11 seasons in the minors, Machi made his major league debut in September and appeared in eight games for the Giants while allowing five runs in 6.2 innings. He features a fastball that averages 93 mph along with a slider and strong splitter, but his 7.0 K/9 in Triple-A indicates that he does not have the ability to stick around for a full major league season despite strong control (2.7 BB/9). Expect Machi to spend another season in Triple-A, and he should be considered a non-factor for 2013.

2007

Machi was signed as a minor league free agent and added to the 40-man roster following the 2006 season. He pitched at Double-A Montgomery in the Tampa Bay chain in 2006. Given the depth of the Toronto bullpen from the right side, he's not expected to have a large role in 2007.
