Machi split time between the San Francisco and Boston organizations in 2015. In the never-ending testament to the unpredictable nature of relievers, Machi, coming off two nice seasons with the Giants, imploded in 2015 and was released in July after posting a 5.14 ERA and a second straight year of a diminished strikeout rate. The Red Sox, desperate for bullpen arms, claimed him and immediately put him to work in late-inning situations. He didn’t fare much better in Boston, but was part of a committee of relievers to pick up save opportunities when Koji Uehara suffered a season-ending forearm injury. With Boston, Machi had a 5.09 ERA and four saves in 26 games. The split-fingered fastball that worked so well for Machi in 2013 and 2014 has become less effective, which contributed to the poor 2015 numbers. He signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in the offseason and will try to win a bullpen role this spring.
