Welker (elbow) was released by the Pirates on Monday.

ANALYSIS
Welker was designated for assignment July 9 after undergoing Tommy John surgery on June 6. The team decided to release the veteran reliever rather than wait on him. He won't be able to contribute this year for anyone, but there may be teams that will take a chance on him as an option in the next couple years.

Welker displayed a strong strikeout rate at Triple-A last season (9.3 K/9) but mediocre control (65:31 K:BB ratio). His 3.57 ERA at Triple-A was enough to get him called up for two games with the Pirates where he had two scoreless appearances. He was then traded to Minnesota in the Justin Morneau deal. The Pirates apparently had seller's remorse as they made a deal to bring him back to the organization in the offseason. With the Pirates showing renewed interest in Welker, it bodes well for his chances to make the bullpen in spring training. His strikeout rate and velocity (97 mph fastball) make him an intriguing arm, but he'll need to improve his control to thrive in the majors.

Welker impressed Pirates management enough that it placed him on the 40-man roster in 2011. The 2007 second-round draft pick then rewarded the organization with a 2.29 ERA split between Double-A and Triple-A. He yielded 43 hits in 55 innings with a 1.24 WHIP and 49:25 K:BB ratio. Walker, 27, is at a critical juncture in his career. He's a long shot to start the season in the majors, but another strong showing at Triple-A could put him in line for a midseason callup. From a fantasy perspective, however, there's no reason to chase him in drafts.
