Triunfel inked a minor league contract with the Reds on Friday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Triunfel spent the entirety of the 2015 season at the Triple-A level in the Giants organization with Brandon Crawford presenting a road block in front of him at shortstop. Although the Reds have some nice pieces in the infield as well, there's still a better chance for the 25-year-old to crack the big league roster with his new club than in years past. Even if that's the case, Triunfel doesn't present much upside offensively, limiting his potential fantasy value.

Injuries and stalled development derailed a once promising career for Triunfel. His only shot of sticking in the big leagues is as a utility infielder, and even that is not likely – at least with the Mariners, who signed Willie Bloomquist to fill that role in the offseason. It wouldn't surprise if the Mariners decided to put Triunfel's 40-man spot to better use. Until then, he will hang out at Triple-A Tacoma just in case disaster strikes.
The one-time top prospect in the organization finally got a taste of Seattle last season with a September callup. He's still only 23, but Triunfel's biggest problem is his skills aren't advancing. A .699 OPS at Triple-A Tacoma last year - his second year at that level - does not impress. He doesn't walk (23 in 500-plus PA) and hasn't ever hit for much power. Despite that, he's still on the 40-man roster. His middle-infield defense is good enough to perhaps compete for the backup infield job this spring, but the Mariners all but killed those hopes when they traded for Robert Andino in November.
The broken leg Triunfel suffered in 2009 really set him back, but last season he showed signs of growth at Double-A Jackson before a promotion to Triple-A Tacoma. The injury appears to have sapped his speed, and his plate discipline still needs improvement. But Triunfel is still just 22, so he has plenty of time to continue developing.
Triunfel missed all but 11 games last year to a broken left fibula and torn ankle ligaments. He used the Arizona Fall League and then winter ball to get back into playing shape, but it remains to be seen how he'll bounce back from the injury. One of the organization's top prospects, Triunfel can play three infield positions and had 32 XBH and 30 SB in 2008 at High-A. Just 20, there's no rush on Triunfel's arrival in Seattle, which, because of the injury delay, probably won't be in 2010.
The organization's top prospect, Triunfel will take on Double-A this season after conquering High-A last year with 32 extra-base hits and 30 stolen bases. Triunfel struggled early and was suspended in May for 10 games for violating team rules, but he hit .347 with 19 extra-base hits over his last 210 at-bats to blunt any creeping doubts. Still only 19, Triunfel is keeping his options open in the field, playing second base and third base in the Arizona Fall League and the Dominican Winter League. He could get a taste of the big leagues in late 2010 before heading to Seattle for good in 2011 as one of baseball's best prospects.
Triunfel might be the most talented prospect in the Mariners organization. After hitting .309 in 152 at-bats at Low-A Wisconsin, he was promoted to High-A High Desert and, impressively, more than held his own despite being just 17-years old. He hit .288 in 208 Cal League at-bats, and while he notched only 12 extra-base hits, scouts expect him to develop into 30-HR power at the major league level. A shortstop with a rocket arm, Triunfel needs another year or two in the minors, but don't be surprised if he surfaces in 2010, likely with a position change.
