Carlson was released by the Red Sox on Wednesday, Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein reports.
ANALYSIS
Carlson pitched only one game for Double-A Portland after spending most of the season on the DL, allowing three runs on five hits in one inning of relief work. At 31 years old and after being sidelined for all of 2011 with a torn rotator cuff, it may be the end of the line for Carlson.

A spring training knee injury landed Carlson at Triple-A Las Vegas to start last season, and he didn't pitch well enough to warrant a call-up until mid-August. David Purcey appears to have passed him as the team's late-inning lefty with the departure of Scott Downs, but he'll be back in a middle relief role.
Carlson had nearly an identical season to his 2008 campaign apart from an extra two dozen balls finding grass instead of leather, resulting in his ERA jumping from 2.25 to 4.66 and WHIP from 1.033 to 1.300. The owners that chased his 2008 stats (7-2, 2.25 ERA, 1.033 WHIP) were badly burned and there's simply not any upside here to roll the dice again. Sure, the two in-house closer candidates in Jason Frasor and Scott Downs are both in the last year of their contracts and candidates to be dealt during the season, but there's no guarantee Carlson would be the one to benefit. He'll be back as the team's second lefty behind Scott Downs out of the bullpen.
Carlson stepped into a set-up role and had a very nice season (1.03 WHIP, 2.25 ERA and a 7-2 record) for the Jays. Every year there seems to be a middle reliever that comes out of nowhere to post nice numbers and promptly fade away the next season. He's the third lefty in the Jays' bullpen behind B.J. Ryan and Scott Downs and doesn't figure to get into the closer's mix. As a result, there's no sense in chasing last year's stats.
