Achilles
January 31, 2018
Martinez suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon last week, and will likely be out for the next six months.
ANALYSIS
The infielder recently underwent surgery in Cleveland after sustaining the injury in the Dominican Republic while doing exercises. Martinez will subsequently miss spring training, and more likely than not, four months of the upcoming season before returning to the field sometime in August, barring any additional setbacks. The 35-year-old is signed to a minor-league deal with the club for the third straight season, but he's found his way onto the big-league roster each time, playing in 28 games between Cleveland and Tampa Bay in 2017. There will likely be an update on his status in the coming months when he's able to resume baseball activities.

Martinez, who made the last out of the 2016 World Series, was used mostly as a utility man in 2016. He started the season with the Indians before being traded in July to the Red Sox. The Red Sox designated Martinez for assignment a month later, which led to him being picked back up by the Indians on waivers for the remainder of the season. In 104 major league plate appearances in 2016, Martinez slashed .238/.267/.307 with one home run and a measly .252 wOBA. In addition to his struggles driving the baseball, Martinez also posted a very disappointing 3.8 percent walk rate. At 34 years old, there is nothing to suggest Martinez will ever become anything more than a utility infielder and outfielder, who provides most of his value as a defensive replacement. In fact, Martinez will need to make a strong impression in spring training in order to make the Indians’ 2017 25-man roster.
Martinez got a cup of coffee with the Indians at the end of the 2015 season but spent most of his season at Triple-A Columbus, hitting .289/.344/.424 with 24 doubles and five homers in 102 games. The 32-year old journeyman can handle the outfield as well as second and third base defensively, utility which has earned him some short looks in parts of five years at the big league level with the Phillies, Pirates and Indians. He's a career .187/.235/.256 hitter in the big leagues and may have a hard time finding a gig now that he's arbitration eligible. He didn't have much of a future in the Cleveland organization and the team predictably outrighted him off the 40-man roster. He rejected a subsequent minor league assignment and opted for free agency, where he'll presumably look for a situation with a better chance of cracking someone's bench in a reserve role.
Martinez missed the first two months of last season after breaking his foot during spring training. He saw limited action with the Phillies last season and barely hit when he was in the lineup. Martinez was outrighted off the 40-man roster this past winter and looks like a long shot to see any time in the majors this year.
Martinez really had no business being in the majors last year but the Phillies kept the Rule 5 pick on their roster all season. Martinez was able to accumulate a significant number of at-bats thanks to the various injuries suffered by the Phillies' aging infielders. Martinez offers little pop or speed but is a decent defender. He's a nice utility player but nothing more. He'll compete for a bench job this spring.
Martinez, who was selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Phillies this winter, hit .272/.312/.408 in 133 games between Double-A and Triple-A last season. Martinez is expected to get a long look for a bench job this spring. He'll be competing with veterans Wilson Valdez and Pete Orr.
