Campana was assigned to minor league camp Monday.
ANALYSIS
Campana missed all of 2015 with a torn ACL, which prompted the White Sox to release him prior to the season. The Nats signed Campana to a minor league deal last August, and the 29-year-old returned to baseball activities during the offseason. Campana figures to begin the year in Triple-A, the level at which he appeared in 100 games for the Angels and Diamondbacks organizations in 2014.

Campana was acquired from the Diamondbacks as an ancillary piece in the deal that brought pitcher Joe Thatcher to the Halos. He is well known for his ability to steal bases, having been caught just nine times in 66 career attempts, but the 28-year-old Campana offers little else from a fantasy perspective, as he has tallied a career .583 OPS, and hit just .187 in 44 games split between the Diamondbacks and Angels in 2014. Campana was outrighted off the Angels' 40-man roster in late October after being left off the postseason roster, but he was scooped up by the White Sox on a minor league deal in November. There is certainly room in baseball for players who can provide speed off the bench, but until he can provide something with the bat, Campana will be pressed to carve out more than the occasional stretch of regular playing time.
Campana was a situational call-up for the 2013 Diamondbacks, and has used primarily as a pinch-runner. One of the fastest players in the league, Campana boasts a phenomenal 89.8 percent success rate on his 69 career stolen base attempts. There are quite a few outfielders ahead of him on Arizona's depth chart, but he figures to compete for a roster spot during spring training.
If you're looking for a one-dimensional part-time steals guy, Campana is your guy - provided he can keep a major league job. Campana stole 30 bags in 174 at-bats, but otherwise posted a .264/.308/.299 line before getting sent down to make room for Brett Jackson in August. He'll battle for a reserve outfield job this spring, but the Cubs have an increasingly crowded outfield which could make it very difficult for him to carve out more than occasional at-bats.
Campana has one appreciable skill, and that's his ability to steal bases. He stole a whopping 24 in 26 attempts last year in just 143 at-bats. Campana doesn't have any power and isn't especially skilled at drawing walks, though he did hit for average the last two years in the high minors. He could make the team as a fourth or fifth outfielder and steal another 20 bases in that role, but it's hard to envision him seeing regular at-bats.
