Saupold signed a contract with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Baseball Organization on Wednesday, Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net reports.
Saupold will take his talents overseas after being outrighted off the Tigers' 40-man roster during the 2018 season. The 28-year-old right-hander failed to impress across parts of three major-league seasons with the Tigers, posting a combined 4.98 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 5.9 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 across 106.2 innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
The Tigers' bullpen lacked quality alternatives, opening the door for Saupold to appear in 45 games in 2017. During his time at Triple-A last season, Saupold was used as a starter, and the results were pretty good, including a 2.90 ERA, and a better walk rate (3.8 BB/9) than his mark from his time in the Detroit bullpen (4.5 BB/9). Unfortunately, he didn't show an ability to miss bats as a reliever (6.3 K/9), and his home-run rate nearly tripled (1.29 HR/9) his results with Toledo. At 28, his value to the Tigers may be provided as a rotation depth option at Triple-A if he's unable to find another pitch in his arsenal that works against big-league hitters to pair with his cutter. The Tigers may opt to try and find value internally for their bullpen as they begin a rebuilding phase in 2018, giving him another year to figure it all out as a reliever in the process.
Saupold pitched quite well for Triple-A Toledo in 2016, holding a 2.30 ERA over 11 starts and 74.1 innings. He was called up to the Tigers in early May to serve in a bullpen role but imploded twice toward the end of May, allowing eight runs between two outings before being placed on the disabled list with a groin injury. His poor performance sent him back to Toledo upon regaining health, where he remained the rest of the season, save for an emergency call as the Tigers needed an extra arm in August. Saupold's arsenal is about 80 percent fastballs and cutters, suggesting he may be better destined for the bullpen, although he only tops out in the low 90s. He's shown flashes of decent strikeout rates throughout his minor league career, but it's actually been negatively correlated with his ability to get guys out, suggesting he's more of a contact pitcher going forward. Unless he's able to grab a fifth starter role, Saupold won't have much fantasy value as a low-strikeout reliever.
