Signs minor league deal with Giants
CSan Francisco Giants
December 30, 2016
Pinto has signed a minor league contract with the Giants, Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Pinto battled concussion issues throughout the entire 2015 campaign and only caught 40 games at Triple-A Colorado Springs last season, making 31 appearances at first base, so his future behind the plate is uncertain. Still just 27, Pinto has hit .277/.346/.451 in parts of four seasons at Triple-A. He had seven homers in 57 games with the Twins in 2014 before making six plate appearances for the Brewers late last year.

Pinto once again showed a tantalizing bat in 2016, the bat that has made it impossible to fully give up on him even as he approaches his late 20s. He continued to pound minor league pitching to the tune of a 132 wRC+ over 315 plate appearances. Of course, it should be noted that he did a lot of that damage at Colorado Springs, one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the minors. Pinto still strikes out at a decent clip and simply hasn't developed into a quality defender behind the plate, in large part because multiple concussions have forced him to miss a great deal of developmental time in recent years. As good as his bat would look at catcher, it all of a sudden looks pedestrian compared to right fielders or first basemen, the only other two positions Pinto would have a chance of sticking at in the majors. He signed a minor league deal with the Giants this offseason and simply looks like an organizational depth piece at this point.
Pinto looked primed for a regular role in the majors last spring, but failed to make the Twins out of spring training, slumped in the minors (.228/.304/.354) and missed two months due to a concussion. Due to the concussion, the Twins elected to hold Pinto out from catching duties for the remainder of the season, and both the Padres and Brewers designated him for assignment after claiming him in the offseason. Pinto had shown good power and plate discipline in his brief stints in the majors, and first base would make sense for a rebuilding club if he's unable to catch anymore.
Pinto began last season as the backup catcher to Kurt Suzuki but struggled to find playing time and was surprisingly sent to the minors in June despite a decent .730 OPS. Back in Triple-A, Pinto showed he's mastered the level with six home runs and a .833 OPS. He then struggled when called up in September by hitting .206 with a .606 OPS. Pinto has shown good power and plate discipline and could be an impact player, but the Twins have inexplicably failed to try to find a role for him in the majors. The Twins haven't been happy with Pinto's defense behind the plate, but the team didn't try to find a part-time role at DH or first base either. He enters spring training with a chance at the backup catcher job, but may wind up in Triple-A again. Pinto may need to move to another organization to find a regular role in the majors.
Pinto could be in the mix for a significant role with the Twins in 2014 after a strong season at Triple-A and a blistering September callup. Pinto is a bit of a late bloomer at age 24 as he came on strong in the minors the past two years capped by hitting .309/.400/.482 with 15 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A last season. He then hit .342/.398/.566 with four homers and five doubles in just 21 games when called up to the majors in September. He's shown good power and plate discipline (82:66 K:BB ratio between both levels), so his major league showing doesn't seem to be a fluke. His defense isn't seen as an asset, however, which may limit his playing time behind the plate. With Joe Mauer moving to first base, Pinto could be in the mix for the starting job or the backup role in spring training. Even if he begins the season at Triple-A, he could get called up early in the season.
