Struggles with control
PBaltimore Orioles
September 16, 2021
Ellis allowed two earned runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three across 4.2 innings Thursday against the Yankees. He did not factor into the decision.
ANALYSIS
Ellis ran into trouble in the second inning when he allowed four runners to reach base, two of which came via walks. He was effective in preventing runs otherwise, though he was pulled with 84 pitches after an inefficient outing. While Ellis hasn't been able to work deep into games -- he's failed to finish five innings in four of his six starts -- he's also maintained a 2.39 ERA across 26.1 innings in the majors this season. However, his 21:13 K:BB suggests he's significantly overperforming and could run into some rough outings before the campaign concludes.

This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
The 23-year-old righty had a pretty strong claim as the second best pitching prospect in the Angels' farm system, behind Sean Newcomb, but then Ellis and Newcomb were traded in an offseason deal with Atlanta for Andrelton Simmons. While Ellis was one of the top prospects in a weak Angels system, he simply blends in on the back half of the Braves' top-20 prospect list. He posted a 70:20 K:BB and a 3.88 ERA in 62.2 innings at High-A, and while his strikeouts dipped and his walks spiked in 78 innings at Double-A, he still managed to post a 3.92 ERA in 15 starts. Ellis probably has the upside of a No. 4 starter, with a more likely role as a No. 5 starter or a swing man. At 6-foot-4, he operates with a low-90s fastball and a mid-80s slider, with his changeup representing his best offering. Look for him to open 2016 at Double-A with a chance to finish the year in Triple-A.
A third-round pick by the Angels in the 2014 amateur draft, Ellis had his first crack at rookie ball in 2014, and did not fare well, allowing 12 earned runs and giving up eight walks in 15.2 innings. While such a small sample size on a young arm is likely indicative of nothing by itself, Ellis has been known to be erratic with his command, as he posted a 3.3 BB/9 in 169 innings at Ole Miss. Ellis has a low-to-mid-90s fastball to go with a promising curveball and changeup, but he has trouble controlling the bender at times. The 22-year-old capped off his collegiate career with a flourish, posting a 2.55 ERA in 19 games (18 starts) in 2014. While he's certainly a work in progress, Ellis could potentially develop two plus secondary pitches, which would aid in his ascent through the minor leagues.
