Grayson Greiner
Grayson Greiner
26-Year-Old CatcherC
Detroit Tigers
2019 Fantasy Outlook
Greiner looks to be the Tigers' primary catcher this season with James McCann non-tendered and no other appealing alternatives on the roster. The unusually tall (6-foot-6) backstop posted a promising .266/.350/.405 line in 46 games at Triple-A Toledo last season but looked like a backup in his first taste of big-league action. That performance wasn't significantly out of line with Greiner's prospect reports, as he never had significant hype. He was supposed to have a bit of power, and he regularly ran slugging percentages above .400 in the minors, but he couldn't manage a single homer in his time with the Tigers. There's at least a bit of hope he could provide some power this season, as his 87.9 mph average exit velocity ranked in the middle of the pack last season. Greiner is very much in the mix in AL-only leagues simply due to his playing time but will need to tap into that power to have broader appeal. Read Past Outlooks

Set for everyday opportunities
CDetroit Tigers
December 12, 2018
Manager Ron Gardenhire said Wednesday that he anticipates Greiner serving as the Tigers' everyday catcher in 2019, Chris McCosky of the Detroit News reports.
ANALYSIS
Gardenhire added that John Hicks is viewed as Greiner's backup and could see some time at first base. Greiner played in 30 games during his major-league debut with Detroit this past season and hit just .219/.328/.281 with six doubles and 12 RBI in 116 plate appearances. The 26-year-old underwent surgery on his right wrist in mid-October but is expected to be fully recovered by spring training.
