Grayson Greiner
Grayson Greiner
27-Year-Old CatcherC
Detroit Tigers
2019 Fantasy Outlook
Greiner looks to be the Tigers' primary catcher this season with James McCann non-tendered and no other appealing alternatives on the roster. The unusually tall (6-foot-6) backstop posted a promising .266/.350/.405 line in 46 games at Triple-A Toledo last season but looked like a backup in his first taste of big-league action. That performance wasn't significantly out of line with Greiner's prospect reports, as he never had significant hype. He was supposed to have a bit of power, and he regularly ran slugging percentages above .400 in the minors, but he couldn't manage a single homer in his time with the Tigers. There's at least a bit of hope he could provide some power this season, as his 87.9 mph average exit velocity ranked in the middle of the pack last season. Greiner is very much in the mix in AL-only leagues simply due to his playing time but will need to tap into that power to have broader appeal. Read Past Outlooks

Greiner is starting at catcher and batting eighth in Sunday's game against the White Sox.
ANALYSIS
Greiner sat out for the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, but he'll slide back into the lineup for Sunday's season finale. The 26-year-old hasn't done much offensively with a .205/.255/.312 slash line, and he'll likely compete with Jake Rogers for playing time in Detroit next year.

How does Grayson Greiner compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
