Signs with Cubs

January 29, 2018
Bernard signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs, Emily Waldon of The Athletic Detroit reports.
ANALYSIS
Bernard spent all of 2017 with Triple-A Sacramento, the Giants' affiliate, and he will likely be starting the 2018 season again at Triple-A -- this time with the Iowa Cubs. The 27-year-old slashed just .245/.303/.347 in 82 games last season. He is considered a speedy outfielder who also possesses above-average tools in the field. His focus for the 2018 season will most certainly be to improve his numbers at the plate, which, if successful, could lead to him seeing some time in the majors.

2016 Fantasy Outlook
After being released by the Padres in January 2014, Bernard found his legs in the Tigers' system. He went on a tear in 2014, winning the Midwest League MVP by batting .323/.394/.422 with six homers, 47 RBI and 45 stolen bases. He followed that up at Double-A in 2015 by hitting .301/.352/.408 with four homers, 36 RBI and 43 stolen bases. Bernard didn't get a September call-up in 2015, but don't hold that against him. His excellent play against lefties last season (.803 OPS) could be his ticket to a part-time gig with the Tigers in 2016, especially if the team wants to use their cash at another position, but a short-end platoon role would make him difficult to roster in mixed leagues, even with the potential for 15-20 steals.
