Labourt signed a minor-league contract with the Rays on Wednesday, Brandon Warne of ZoneCoverage.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Labourt last appeared in the Dominican Summer League, posting a 4.76 ERA and 11:9 K:BB across 5.2 innings of work with the White Sox's affiliate. He's still just 24 years old, though he'll need to improve his shaky control if he wants to make it back to the majors.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2017
2016
At 22 years old, Labourt has been seen by some as one of Detroit’s most intriguing prospects due to his powerful fastball and slider. However, his development has been hindered by a lack of pitch control, but hopes were high that Labourt would make progress at High-A Lakeland heading into 2016. On one hand, his level of play remained fairly stagnant and he turned in another discouragingly high walk rate (17.2 percent). While that’s far less than ideal, when dialed in, Labourt was much harder to hit as his opponent batting average plummeted from 2015’s level of .302 to .198. Moving forward, if Labourt fails to show the ability to hone in on pitch location for extended stretches, the Tigers are expected to have him switch from his current role as a starter and develop him as a bullpen option. Regardless of the path they choose, Labourt is likely at least a season away from pitching in the show, as he’s yet to throw above the High-A level.
Labourt’s 5.12 ERA in 116 innings at High-A does not tell the whole story. At 6-foot-4, 205 pounds, he has the body of an innings eater and he also happens to be a lefty who throws in the upper-90s, so he has all the physical gifts one looks for in a power arm. That said, there may not be the requisite third pitch or command for him to make it as a starter long term. Labourt posted an acceptable 3.70 FIP and 34:15 K:BB ratio in 35.2 innings as a starter with High-A Lakeland after the Tigers acquired him from Toronto in the David Price deal. By his previous standards, that seven-start stretch should be seen as a positive step. Detroit will allow him to continue to build upon that performance in a minor league rotation (possibly with Double-A Erie) in 2016, but it is too soon to say with confidence that he will not end up in the bullpen long term.
