2019 Fantasy Outlook
In the three-true-outcome era, Astudillo is an anomaly. He rarely walks (2.1 BB%) and rarely strikes out (3.1 K%). He led the majors with a 91.7% contact rate (min. 90 PA). A solid season at Triple-A (12 home runs, .782 OPS) resulted in a late-season callup and extensive playing time down the stretch. He hit .355, and after not hitting for any power from 2009 to 2016, he appears to finally be a contributor there as well (.161 ISO). However, questions about his defensive home are the reason he is now with his fourth organization. Listed at 5-foot-9, 225 pounds, he may not have the glove to be more than a backup behind the plate, and while he also played third base, second base and left field after reaching the majors for the first time, he is a below-average defender at all of those spots. Even in a part-time role, his eligibility at catcher will make him valuable in most roto leagues, as he could lead all catchers in batting average. Read Past Outlooks

Astudillo (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Double-A Pensacola, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Astudillo has been on the injured list since late June but appears ready to begin his rehab assignment in the coming days. The 27-year-old is likely still several weeks from a return to the major-league club, but it's encouraging to see him ready to begin action in live games.

Stat Review
How does Willians Astudillo compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against this season's data (min 200 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K

  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate

  • SLG

  • wOBA

  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.

2016 Fantasy Outlook
Astudillo saw time at four different positions for High-A Clearwater last season, but primarily split his time between catcher and first base. He may be the best player in all of baseball at making contact. Last season, his contact rate was an otherworldly 97 percent and the year prior it was 95 percent. He has no power or speed, however, which severely limits his fantasy upside should he make it to the majors. He will have to stick at catcher or show he can fill a utility role because his limited power is not a fit at first base. He figures to start the season with Double-A Mississippi, having signed with Atlanta as a minor league free agent in the offseason.
