Slugs two homers Friday
1BBoston Red Sox  AAA
April 27, 2019
Ockimey went 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double and five RBI for Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday.
Ockimey, 23, has dropped several spots on prospect lists since the Red Sox drafted him in 2014 -- so much so that no team selected him last winter when Boston exposed him to the Rule 5 draft. Ockimey is a pull-heavy hitter that sees a lot of shifts and needs to adjust. He struggled in his first exposure to Triple-A last season and continued to scuffle in the Arizona Fall League. Ockimey has turned it around early in 2019 and is hitting .250 with 11 extra-base hits, including five home runs, along with a .617 slugging percentage in 19 games. The 23-year-old will need to sustain his production over the course of the season for the Red Sox to consider adding him to the 40-man roster.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
Ockimey climbed the organizational prospect rankings off a promising year of growth in his first stop at a full-season affiliate. The lefty-hitting first baseman hit .226/.367/.425 with 18 homers in 117 games at Low-A Greenville. The promise is in the power stroke and his on-base ability. What the slash line doesn't reveal is an improvement in both his strikeout and walk rates, attributable to having him fit for contact lenses. Although there's still a significant level of swing-and-miss at the plate, he showed enough with his bat to warrant interest. There were negatives, however, as Ockimey is a pull-heavy hitter who faced infield shifts, something rarely seen at the lower level of the minors. He'll need to develop some opposite field power or he runs the risk of falling below the level of a .250 hitter. As a prospect limited to first base defensively, Ockimey will need to hit for power and average in order to be a part of Boston's long-term plans.
Ockimey, a fifth-round draft pick 2014, is a well-developed prospect (6-foot-1, 225 pounds) who is limited to first base. As such, his bat needs to be good. He showed some power potential at Short-Season Lowell in 2015, but there's also a lot of swing-and-miss in the bat, striking out in 34 percent of his plate appearances. He tends to get the bat out early, which leaves him vulnerable to off-speed offerings. Ockimey will need to hit and hit for power if he's going to move up the ladder.
