Averaging almost one strikeout per inning
PLos Angeles Dodgers  A+
June 17, 2017
Sheffield has 49 strikeouts and 24 walks in 12 starts (50.2 innings) with Low-A Great Lakes.
At 22 years old, Sheffield is putting up a 2.84 ERA with a WHIP of 1.37. He is averaging just over four innings per start and has only reached six innings once, a sign that the Dodgers are stretching him out slowly, but he's stranding 84.1 percent of baserunners, which indicates he knows how to step up his game when people get on base. A big problem for Sheffield has been his ability to avoid the big mistake, as he's giving up a home run every two starts.

2017 Fantasy Outlook
A prep darling years ago, Sheffield saw his draft stock plunge in 2013 after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Rather than sign with the Red Sox as a 13th-round pick, Sheffield bet on himself, and that bet paid off in a big way. After a few successful seasons at Vanderbilt, Sheffield landed with the Dodgers at No. 36 overall in 2016, earning an (above-slot-value) $1.86 million signing bonus. He threw just 12 innings in his first professional season and that's too small a sample to derive any meaningful conclusions. Sheffield features an electric fastball, was able to maintain his velocity in college as his pitch counts ticked up and both his slider and changeup grade out as borderline plus. While there's enough here to pique the interest of those in long-term keeper leagues, Sheffield is undersized, and most will want to simply monitor his development as a starter from afar for the time being.
