Heads to MLB spring training
PBoston Red Sox  AAA
January 10, 2019
Shawaryn received an invitation to major-league spring training Thursday.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander reached Triple-A for the first time last season, amassing a 3.93 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 36 innings at Pawtucket. The 2018 campaign marked the first time he failed to strike out a batter per inning, though he continued to exhibit good control, walking just 38 hitters in 149.1 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. There's not really a hole in Boston's pitching staff for Shawaryn to fill out of spring training, but given his proximity to the majors, there's a decent chance that he comes up to the majors at some point in 2019 to make a spot start or two or work as a multi-inning reliever.

2016 Fantasy Outlook
Shawaryn was drafted by the Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. The Red Sox like their pitchers tall and Shawaryn fits that description, standing 6-foot-3 at 225 pounds. A highly regarded prospect out of the University of Maryland, Shawaryn saw his draft stock fall as he experienced a drop in fastball velocity, leading to mediocre results, during his junior year for the Terps. The velocity returned since joining the Red Sox, getting back up to 92-93 mph. He uses a slider and changeup, while working on adding a curveball. The right-hander brings a low three-quarters arm slot, which creates some deception for hitters.
