The Orioles signed Viloria to a minor-league contract Monday, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Viloria went 5-for-30 in the minors while with the Angels, and now he'll look to turn the tide with Triple-A Norfolk while giving the Orioles organizational depth behind the plate. Viloria appeared in 10 games in the majors this season with Cleveland, but the chances of him making it back are slim.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2017
Viloria got his first major-league callup when rosters expanded in September, getting into 10 games and going 7-for-27 at the plate. He had previously never appeared above High-A, but the Royals needed an extra catcher and he was on the 40-man roster, so his debut wound up being accelerated. It would be a surprise to see him back in the big leagues anytime soon unless an injury forces the Royals' hand. He spent the bulk of last season at High-A Wilmington, where he hit a fine but not particularly noteworthy .260/.342/.360 with six homers in 100 games. The offensive bar at catcher is low, and Viloria projects to eventually meet it at least enough to be a backup.
Viloria was named the MVP of the Pioneer League after winning the batting crown (.376 average, .418 BABIP) and finishing second in OPS (1.042), trailing Dodgers outfield prospect DJ Peters, who is 14 months his senior. An under-the-radar signing out of Columbia in 2013, Viloria already carries himself with a certain swagger, aptly flipping his bat and admiring his work. Even during a down year in 2015 as one of the youngest players in the Appalachian League, Viloria still posted an outstanding 17:23 BB:K in 45 games. He walked a little less in 2016, but kept his strikeout rate under 14 percent while notching 37 extra-base hits in 58 games. There are already whispers that he won't be good enough defensively to stick behind the plate, which is a bad sign for any catching prospect who has yet to play in a full-season league. His age-20 season with Lexington will serve as a chance to prove that his bat is legitimate enough for him to remain relevant even if he moves off catcher.
