2022 Fantasy Outlook
Peters ended 2021 on the injured list with a strained lower back, but he's ready to go early in spring training for Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old was acquired by the Pirates at the trade deadline last year and pitched reasonably well in six starts with a 3.71 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB across 26.2 frames. However, his 4.48 xERA, 4.54 xFIP and career 1.57 WHIP don't paint a pretty picture. He's a strong bet to begin 2022 in the starting rotation, as he is out of minor-league options, but he could be transitioned into a relief role or designated for assignment if he struggles. Chased in first inning
Peters (3-2) allowed five runs in four hits and a walk while taking a loss against the Cubs on Monday. He recorded two outs.
ANALYSIS
Peters gave up two runs and loaded the bases before he was relieved in favor of Bryse Wilson. He would get charged with three more runs as all of the runners he left on base came around to score during the Cubs' eight-run first inning. Peters saw his season ERA jump from 1.83 to 3.98 through 20.1 frames.

Had baseball not effectively legislated out the LOOGY role, Peters could easily fill that role now and stick around the majors for longer than his current projected path. Peters has a tremendous high-spin curveball that lefties hit .143 against in 2019, and overall, he holds his own against lefties. The problems arise when anyone hitting righty steps out of the dugout as Peters has been incredibly hittable. Righties have enjoyed a career .293/.364/.550 line against him in nearly 100 innings of work. Simply put, unless the league goes back to allowing LOOGYs, Peters is not rosterable because he has nothing to keep righties from racing to the bat rack and begging managers to allow them to hit and pad their stats.
