Zac Lowther

25-Year-Old PitcherSP
2021 Fantasy Outlook
Taken with the 74th overall pick in the 2017 draft, Lowther's arsenal doesn't impress, but he's the kind of pitcher who could have a big-league future nonetheless. The bespectacled lefty has three average pitches in a fastball that comes in at anywhere from 87-93 mph, a changeup and a curve, but his delivery has enough deception to let them play up. His best asset might be his baseball IQ, however. Even in the low minors, Lowther was using video to hone his repertoire and improve the tunneling of his fastball and curve. The result was a big 2019 campaign at Double-A, and a 2020 season spent at the Orioles' alternate training site gave him ample opportunity to pick the brains of better coaches and more experienced teammates. Baltimore has plenty of room in its rotation for younger arms who prove they're ready, so if Lowther gets off to a quick start at Triple-A, his major-league debut could soon follow. Lowther (1-3) allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits and struck out four in five innings, taking the loss versus Boston on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
It wasn't a bad final start of the year for Lowther, but Baltimore's offense produced just four hits and two walks in the contest. The southpaw was better to finish the season with just five runs (four earned) allowed in his final 13.1 innings across three starts. He ended the season with a 6.67 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 30:13 K:BB in 29.2 innings. Lowther will likely be considered for a spot in the rotation heading into 2022.
