2025 Fantasy Outlook
Wells had a career year in 2023, but he made three starts in 2024 before getting shut down and eventually needing UCL revision and internal brace augmentation surgery in mid-June. General manager Mike Elias said in November that the team is hoping to get Wells back around midseason to work in some capacity, and his role will likely be determined by how quickly he recovers and if the team needs him in the rotation. It's possible that those in dynasty leagues and draft-and-hold leagues will be able to get double-digit starts from Wells later this summer, and he's shown at least streamer upside and when he's going well, he can be utilized in mixed leagues. Wells has a good changeup, a plus slider and plus control, which helps make up for his low-90s fastball. He also has elite movement (19 inches of induced vertical break) on his four-seamer, which allows the pitch to play above its velocity. In roto leagues, Wells' career 1.12 WHIP in 46 big-league starts is perhaps the best argument for monitoring his recovery. Read Past Outlooks

2024
2023
2022
Wells was dynamite in the first half for the Orioles in 2023, putting up a 3.18 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 103:24 K:BB over 104.2 frames. He then fell apart in a hurry after the All-Star break, getting knocked around in three straight starts which led to a demotion to the minors. Wells got moved to the bullpen at Triple-A Norfolk and eventually found his way back to Baltimore, where he made eight scoreless appearances between the regular season and playoffs. The plan is for Wells to return to the rotation in 2024, with the hope that he can rediscover his 2023 first-half form. Wells is an extreme flyball pitcher with home run issues, and his expected stats say he overachieved some last season. He's always been a WHIP standout, though, and his home run problems are muted somewhat by the new left field dimensions at Camden Yards.
Wells turned a moderately successful 2021 as a reliever into a decent 2022 as a starter. He logged a 4.25 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 76:28 K:BB across 103.2 innings across 23 starts, though he needed some time to stretch out early in the year and lost six weeks in the second half to an oblique injury. The right-hander also ended the season on the shelf with a shoulder issue, which is concerning since it's the second year in a row that's popped up. The Orioles lacked a true ace after John Means' Tommy John surgery last spring, allowing Wells to stick around as a starter. Grayson Rodriguez and DL Hall are on the horizon of making a major-league impact, so it could end up making Wells a swingman. He might make do as a late-round pick in fantasy if he's a starter, but there's little chance he'll be in the mix for saves if he ends up in the bullpen. In any case, Wells has yet to prove he has the durability for a full major-league campaign, and he's yet to throw more than 119.1 innings in any season.
Wells boasts an intriguing skill set, but it comes with a couple of warnings. Last season was his first since 2018 Tommy John surgery, and he ended the year a week early with right shoulder inflammation. The bigger concern is Wells is an extreme flyball pitcher, which can be hazardous in Camden Yards, not to mention the AL East. On the other hand, he's always missed bats while being frugal with free passes. Last season's 23.7% K-BB% was 38th best among the 398 hurlers collecting at least 40 innings. Wells features a 95-mph four-seam fastball, slider, curve, and occasional changeup. He was 4-for-6 in saves during September before he was shut down. At minimum, Wells should be given the chance to break camps as the Orioles closer. If he can manage to keep homers under control, Wells has a chance to be a sneaky source of saves.

In line for rotation spot in 2024
PBaltimore Orioles
October 19, 2023
Wells is expected to return to a rotation role for the Orioles in 2024, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.
Analysis
Wells was demoted to the minors and eventually the bullpen following a rough patch in the middle of the season. He thrived down the stretch in a relief role, throwing a combined 8.1 scoreless innings while yielding just one hit and one walk with nine strikeouts. The 29-year-old was the Orioles' best starter in the first half, though, collecting a 3.18 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 103:24 K:BB over 104.2 frames. Now that Wells' workload is built up a little more, the O's will hope fatigue isn't as much of a factor in 2024.
