2020 Fantasy Outlook
Sanchez's yo-yo 2019 campaign included eight callups to the majors, though he collectively tallied only 31 at-bats with the Nationals. As in his previous big-league stints, the Venezuelan infielder showed limited patience at the plate -- he has taken a scant three walks in 166 career plate appearances -- while wielding a tepid bat. The .226/.250/.226 slash line Sanchez registered last season gave Washington little reason to keep him on the major-league roster for more than brief intervals, but his performance was no surprise given the lack of power and on-base skills on his minor-league resume. Once a stolen base threat -- he notched back-to-back 25-steal seasons early in his career -- Sanchez now barely reaches double-digits and has yet to swipe a bag in the majors. He did hit a healthy .316 in Double-A ball in 2019, but there's no reason to expect a major-league breakthrough in his age-29 season. Read Past Outlooks

Optioned to minors
3BWashington Nationals  AA
March 26, 2020
Sanchez was optioned to Double-A Harrisburg on Thursday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Sanchez was always expected to open the season in the minors, and he did little to change those plans by slashing .250/.269/.417 across 24 plate appearances before spring training was suspended. He'll stick in Harrisburg rather than Triple-A Fresno for proximity reasons, in case he needs to get to Washington in a hurry.

Stat Review
How does Adrian Sanchez compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP

  • ISO
Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. A computation used to measure a batter's raw power.
  • AVG

  • SLG

  • OPS

  • wOBA
Weighted on-base average. Measures a player's overall offensive contributions per plate appearance. wOBA combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
Sanchez can play all around the infield, but he's been a well-below-average hitter at every stop above rookie ball. He's never hit more than five home runs in any professional season, and he's posted OBPs of .292 and .285 at Double-A and Triple-A, respectively. Sanchez walked once in 75 plate appearances in his first exposure to big-league pitching while striking out 25 times. He has a track record of making more consistent contact, but his patience at the plate has always been lacking. Further, he hasn't run much at all since his back-to-back 25-steal seasons on the farm in 2011 and 2012. Wilmer Difo is expected to break camp as the Nationals' utility infielder, meaning Sanchez will likely be relegated to the minors to begin the 2018 season. A callup at some point seems inevitable, but even then, Sanchez will be merely a desperation add in NL-only formats.
