2021 Fantasy Outlook
What Rodriguez accomplished in 2018 was done mostly with smoke and mirrors, and he predictably struggled in 2019 as reality caught up with him. His 2020 season was mostly a wash as he pitched in two games before the Giants designated him for assignment. Rodriguez signed a minor-league deal with Colorado this offseason as the Rockies are continually looking for pitching depth to help deal with the strains of playing in the expanses of Coors Field. That said, there is no reason you want these fringe skills on your roster, especially when the pitcher has to pitch in Coors Field. Read Past Outlooks

Gets minors deal with Rockies
PColorado Rockies  NRI
November 9, 2020
Rodriguez signed a minor-league deal with the Rockies on Monday which includes an invitation to big-league camp, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Rodriguez broke into the league with a 2.81 ERA in 2018, though his 3.74 FIP and 4.56 xFIP that season suggested he'd overachieved by quite a bit. Over the last two seasons, he hasn't pitched at even the level suggested by those numbers, as he owns a 5.94 ERA in 103.0 innings. While he could earn opportunities with the Rockies at some point, adding Coors Field to an already unimpressive recent resume makes him a rather unappealing fantasy option.

Stat Review
How does Dereck Rodriguez compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2019
Rodriguez's stellar rookie campaign looked like a house of cards and indeed it was. His performance cratered in his sophomore season and Rodriguez was demoted to the minors and ultimately to the bullpen. He was even worse in relief, posting a 6.53 ERA compared to a 5.40 ERA as a starter. The right-hander's already-low strikeout rate fell to 16.2% while his walk rate ticked up to 8.2%. His HR/9 nearly tripled, going from 0.68 to 1.91, and the long ball was a problem at home, on the road and versus lefties and righties. He's the son of a Hall of Famer, but Rodriguez doesn't throw his fastball hard or with any spin, he doesn't challenge hitters in the strike zone with that pitch and he doesn't get swinging strikes with his secondary offerings. He has little appeal as a starter and even less as a reliever, as realistically he doesn't have the stuff to be the closer.
On the surface, Rodriguez, the son of Hall of Famer Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, had a brilliant rookie season and appears worthy of inclusion in that tier of emerging frontline starters with the likes of Walker Buehler and Jack Flaherty. That's why it's important to get under the hood -- Rodriguez is nowhere near as good as those aforementioned arms. He managed just an 18.3% strikeout rate, and even that mark may have been higher than he deserved (8.6% swinging-strike rate and 57.5% first-pitch strike rate). His walk rate was decent enough at 7.4%, but he had just a 42.7 Zone%, which doesn't portend great control numbers moving forward. He does have the fortune of pitching in the cavernous Oracle Park (formerly AT&T Park), but Rodriguez is not a big groundball pitcher and his opponents' hard-hit rate of 39.4% suggests the long ball could become a problem on the road. If the price gets any higher than a few bucks, pass.
