2024 Fantasy Outlook
Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2022 and made it back for two appearances at Triple-A in September of 2023. His mid-to-upper-90s fastball velocity was back, averaging 96 mph while touching 99 mph. His devastating high-spin slider was also at its pre-surgery 85-86 mph velocity. This is his last season with a minor-league option, so the 25-year-old righty may move back and forth between Triple-A and the majors, particularly if the Yankees want to keep developing him as a starter. While Gil's repertoire is pretty shallow -- he'll flash a decent changeup but it is rarely used -- the biggest swing skill for him will be his command, as his fastball and slider are good enough pitches to turn a lineup over twice if he's locating them. He's had a walk rate north of 14 percent during four of his six assignments since 2021, and the hope is that his control will be passable as he gets further removed from surgery. If he does get moved to the bullpen, Gil has the stuff to pitch in high-leverage situations. Read Past Outlooks
Issues seven free passes in loss
Gil (0-1) took the loss Monday against the Blue Jays, allowing three runs on three hits and seven walks over five innings. He struck out six.
ANALYSIS
Gil struggled to find the strike zone Monday night in Toronto, walking seven batters, equaling a career-high previously set on Sept. 8, 2021, also against the Blue Jays. However, the 25-year-old still flashed his strikeout prowess, punching out six batters and generating 16 whiffs. Gil looks to bounce back in his next start, scheduled against the Rays at home.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Potential bullpen weapon
Gil could be a part of the Yankees' bullpen during the postseason, Conor Foley of The Scranton Times-Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
A starter by trade, Gil has pitched in relief at Triple-A during his last two appearances in preparation for a potential postseason role. He is the Yankees' best pitching prospect and should compete for a spot in the starting rotation during spring training 2022.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
2020
Gil's elbow gave out during a start last May at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and he wound up needing Tommy John surgery. His recovery has gone as anticipated but we're unlikely to see him as an option for the Yankees until at least the second half. Gil was arguably the most electric young arm the Yanks had prior to surgery, but he's had trouble taking the ball every fifth day and also throwing strikes. He probably won't have any fantasy value in 2023, but there's still plenty of time for him to turn into something.
