2025 Fantasy Outlook
Following a 2023 campaign in which he made both his Double-A and Triple-A debuts, Montero reached the majors for the first time in 2024. Like a lot of young pitchers, the 24-year-old had some ups and downs, and he finished with a 4.76 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 77 strikeouts across 98.1 innings. Montero flashed some high-end potential, like when he tossed a complete-game shutout on Sept. 10 against Colorado, but he'll need to be more consistent to take the next step as a player. The righty also saw his K/9 dip to 7.06 after he posted marks above 10.0 in each of his last two seasons in the minors. Montero throws hard enough, with a fastball that averaged 94.7 mph last year, so there could be room for growth in the strikeout department. Montero at least figures to have the inside track on a rotation spot to begin the 2025 season, as the Tigers don't have a ton of proven MLB starters outside of staff ace Tarik Skubal. Montero carries some risk, but he could be a useful fantasy contributor if his game continues to progress. Read Past Outlooks

Notches quality start in win
Montero (4-1) earned the win in Monday's game against the Rays, allowing one run on four hits and one walk across six innings with four strikeouts.
Analysis
The Detroit right-hander required only 68 pitches, 47 of which were strikes, to secure his second quality start of the season. The only blemish on Montero's performance was a Jonathan Aranda RBI single in the third, as the Tampa Bay lineup was unable to mount any momentum because they managed only one extra-base hit -- a Chandler Simpson double in the fifth. Despite owning a respectable 3.77 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 43:21 K:BB across 62 big-league frames, Montero appears to have made this start to provide the Tigers rotation additional rest around the All-Star break. He is likely to be shuttled back to Triple-A Toledo, where he's pitched to a 5.87 ERA in 23 innings this season.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Montero reached two new levels in 2023, and the young righty posted a 4.66 ERA and 1.37 WHIP while striking out 160 batters over 111.1 innings between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo. The 23-year-old also saw 16 innings of action for High-A West Michigan, with the 127.1 total innings representing a new career high. Like a lot of young pitchers, Montero could work to cut down the walks a bit, but he flashed plenty of potential by recording a K/9 of 10.0 or above at each of the three levels he appeared at in 2023. The Tigers saw enough to add Montero to the 40-man roster in November and protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. He seems to be closing in on his MLB debut in the near future, though he will likely begin 2024 at Triple-A again to get some more work there. If Montero continues to miss bats and can reduce the free passes, a promotion may be in order at some point during the season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Might follow opener Monday
The Tigers are considering whether to utilize an opener in front of Montero against the Cardinals on Monday, reports Evan Woodbery of MLive.com.
Analysis
Detroit announced Tarik Skubal and Jack Flaherty as their starters for Tuesday and Wednesday, but the club has yet to confirm who is pitching in Monday's series opener. Montero followed an opener in his previous outing, and it appears the organization is considering using the strategy again for his next turn through the rotation. The right-hander gave up three runs over 3.1 frames in that appearance, which wasn't an improvement on the 4.15 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 15:10 K:BB over 21.2 innings he posted while starting in his first four MLB outings of the year.
