Young was released in August by San Diego before Texas signed him to a contact to provide some bench depth in September. Despite a poor season, he still hits lefties reasonably well (.268/.329/.479 in 2006), which should net him a spot on the end of the bench for an N.L.-team.
Young recovered from an early April, career-threatening injury to his throwing shoulder and wound up posting fairly typical numbers over the last three months of the season. Even at 39, he still has the superior on-base skills and good speed to leadoff for the Padres. He'll compete for time all over the field, and could actually see some regular at-bats at second base, depending on how that position shapes up this spring.
Young turned in a typical season for him in 2004, although he saw fewer steal signs in Texas. The 15 HR in Milwaukee in 2003 were a fluke, but we all knew that. He saw increased time in the outfield last season, something that could continue with in a utility job with the Padres. He'll be a valuable source of stolen bases no matter what his role.
One way or another EY gets his 25 bags. As long as he has a regular job, he'll be a valuable fantasy second baseman. He'll compete for at bats in left field and second base in Texas.
Young battled back from a horrific start in 2003 to hit .280 with 31 SB. The Brewers wouldn't mind trading Young, but they don't have anything better backing him up so they will stick with him. He's still a decent fantasy option due to his high SB total and playing time.
