Alvarez tried on a couple of occasions to give it a go, but his shoulder problems eventually took their toll. He's expected to retire.
Alvarez has proven to be a very effective lefty out of the pen and spot starter over the past two years. His fantasy value is limited, however, because he can't stay healthy in a starting role and is not suited for closing. Still, he'll provide quality innings pitching half his games in Dodger Stadium.
A great comeback story in 2003. He absolutely dominated Triple-A and finally got his call-up on June 7th. He went back-and-forth from the rotation to the pen until finally the Dodgers realized they were best-served with him starting. He should have a rotation spot again in 2004. He's another Dodger pitcher with an extreme home-road split, posting a 0.57 ERA at home in 2003, and a 4.18 ERA on the road.
He's a lefty, he'll be only 33 in the spring, he's finally healthy, and he should be available cheap as a free agent, so he may get a shot somewhere. If the right team in the right park (say, the Yankees, or Seattle, or maybe Detroit) signs him and uses him as a fifth starter or long man, he could be a pleasant roto surprise.
