When you hit .322 and .348 and people still don't want you, it's a sign that you may need a new career. Attitude questions and a positive steroid test are just two reasons for Sanchez's unemployment, a status that seems unlikely to change.
Before a hamstring injury forced him to miss the last two months of the season, Sanchez was having the best year of his short major league career. Assuming he has no lingering effects from the injury, he should be able to regain the speed that enabled him to steal 44 bases for the Tigers in 2003. Come draft day, he'd be a good source of average and stolen bases on the cheap if he got everyday playing time; check to see if he'll be an everyday player for Tampa Bay, or just a fourth outfielder.
Well, he ran a lot. Sanchez's speed makes him valuable if you need stolen bases. Despite having poor plate discipline, he has remained consistent in batting average over the past two seasons. If your league uses "net" stolen bases, subtracting the time when he's caught, move him down a few pegs on your cheat sheet. He's an out-maker in strat and other sim games. He scored just 58 runs combined in Milwaukee and Detroit, despite having 550 at-bats, most coming from the leadoff spot.
Sanchez had a decent rookie year until a broken ankle sidelined him in early September. Considering that speed is his top asset, how he runs after recovery will be something to watch. Sanchez had 37 SB in 2002, but his fielding woes and base running blunders were hard to overlook. He will also need to improve on his .343 OBP if he wants to continue as a leadoff man. The Brewers plan on making him their starting CF in 2003 and his speed makes him a decent fantasy option.
