Acquired by the Padres with Humberto Quintero for D'Angelo Jimenez, Fernandez has shown himself to be a good contact hitter, albeit with little or no plate discipline. Another year at Triple-A Portland looks to be his 2004 future, as the team continues to assess whether he's become a legitimate prospect, or if the .300 batting average between both high levels was simply an aberration.
