Eyre has bounced between organizations but ended with the Orioles in 2011 and performed admirably in 19 appearances at the major league level. Eyre recorded a 3.44 ERA, but his low strikeout rate (4.9 K/9IP) was heavily propped by a .182 batting average on balls in play. It is extremely unlikely he can maintain this performance without inducing more strikeouts next season, and at 33, he has likely already reached his ceiling.
Eyre spent the season traveling between Triple-A Oklahoma City and the majors, making 17 appearances out of the Rangers' bullpen. He was removed from the 40-man roster in December and accepted an assignment to the minors, where he'll likely spend most of 2010.
Eyre was a curious addition to Texas' 40-man roster this winter having missed all of 2008 recovering from Tommy John surgery, though his solid peripherals (33:8 K:BB ratio in 26.1 innings) in the Arizona Fall League likely played a part. He'll enter spring training with a chance to earn a spot at the back end of the Texas bullpen.
Eyre will try to win a job at the back end of Texas' bullpen this spring. In 2005, he seemed to revive his career with a move to the bullpen, but he reverted back to his unspectacular ways last season and it was surprising he stayed in the majors all year. At age 28 his ceiling isn't high.
After struggling in his first two seasons at Triple-A, Eyre was moved to the bullpen and posted a solid 74/28 K/BB ratio in 82 2/3 innings. He's a bit old to be a prospect, but he could get called up in middle relief if he gets off to a hot start at Triple-A this season.
Eyre's development seemed to stall last year as he struggled in his first move to Triple-A and saw a decline in his strikeout rate at Double-A. As a result, he'll need to catch fire this season to be a factor at the major league level with the Twins.
He had good success when moved up to Double-A last year, so he could be a factor at the major-league level late 2003 or 2004.
