Stat Review
How does Bobby Wilson compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.

  • ISO

  • SLG

  • OPS
On base plus slugging. THe sum of a batter's on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
  • wOBA
Weighted on-base average. Measures a player's overall offensive contributions per plate appearance. wOBA combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
Wilson was well-traveled in 2016, landing in Tampa for a second Rays stint after stops in Detroit and Texas. The veteran backstop actually smacked a career-high seven homers over 251 plate appearances last season, while also driving in a personal-best 33 runs. However, as has been the case throughout his career, consistent contact continued to be a problem, as he connected at only a 72 percent clip. The 33-year-old signed with the Dodgers over the offseason, which leaves him in a clear third catcher role behind Yasmani Grandal and Austin Barnes. If some playing time were to clear up, however, Wilson could potentially provide modest fantasy production in the homer and RBI categories, but he figures to only serve as veteran depth until then.
Wilson was released by Tampa Bay in late July and quickly snatched up by Texas who had a desperate need for anyone with squatting experience. He fulfilled those expectations and little else, hitting just .221/.291/.325 in 31 games, and elected for free agency in November after Texas outrighted him off the 40-man roster. The veteran backstop will likely land a minor-league contract for 2016.
Wilson spent most of the 2012 season as the backup to Chris Iannetta in Anaheim and stumbled into some significant playing time after Iannetta suffered a broken wrist. Unfortunately for the Angels, Wilson was overmatched at the plate, producing a .211/.277/.292 batting line in 201 plate appearances. He's actually a pretty similar player to Jeff Mathis, and the Yankees will look at him during spring training as a non-roster invite.
Wilson served as a reserve catcher for the Angels last season and appeared in 57 games. While the Angels kept three catchers on the roster for most of the season, a deeper roster may prevent them from doing the same in 2012. Chris Iannetta will be the Angels' regular catcher, so Wilson will either serve as his backup or head to Triple-A if the Angels want to keep Hank Conger with the big club for the part-time role.
Wilson played in a career-high 40 games last year thanks to injuries to Jeff Mathis and Kendry Morales, but he still only managed to see 96 at-bats. With Mike Napoli back at catcher due to Morales' return, Mathis' ability to handle the pitching staff, and Hank Conger knocking on the door at Triple-A, Wilson is unlikely to see much major league time this season.
Wilson is slightly better than Jeff Mathis, which is worth getting worked up about if you like the Angels a lot, but not useful information for fantasy players. Wilson is about to get lapped by Hank Conger, and will need a new organization to have any shot at, well, Jeff Mathis' career.
Wilson batted .312 with four home runs and 45 RBI with Triple-A Salt Lake last season. He's currently the third catcher on the Angels' organizational depth chart, which means he will begin next season at Triple-A once again. However, starting catcher Mike Napoli has had trouble staying healthy in the past and Wilson could find himself in the majors if Napoli isn't able to stay on the field.
Wilson showed last season that he has the potential to be a catcher at the major league level. He is very good defensively, and though his power numbers weren’t flashy, he still hit .295 at Triple-A Salt Lake. He doesn’t strike out much, but still could stand to do a better job of working the count after taking 30 walks all season. Wilson is behind several other catchers in the team's pipeline, so it will take a trade or an injury for him to see action with the Angels in 2008.
Wilson doesn't hit as well as Mike Napoli or have the defensive tools to make you forget that he's a backup catcher just trying to get his card. As a backup, he might play ten years the way a guy like Todd Pratt has.
A native of Dunedin, FL, Wilson was selected by the Angels in the 48th round of the 2002 free agent draft.
