Salome took a bit of a step back in 2009 after a breakout season in 2008. He hit .287/.337/.437 in 81 games for Triple-A Nashville, but was constantly missing time due to various injuries. There is little doubt that he can hit well at the major league level, but his defense at catcher is inconsistent and the Brewers are concerned about his ability to handle pitchers. He's been passed on the depth chart by Jonathan Lucroy, which leaves his future with Milwaukee somewhat in doubt. A good season at Triple-A in 2010 could win him the starting job in 2011 or get him traded to another team.
Salome returned from a suspension for performance enhancing drugs and hit .360/.415/.559 for Double-A Huntsville in 2008. The 22-year-old is only 5-foot-7 tall and has a funky batting stance, but it's becoming obvious that he has a talent for hitting. He still needs to improve his defense behind the plate where he's had trouble throwing out runners despite a plus throwing arm. The Brewers likely will start him at Triple-A Nashville for 2009 with an eye on getting him to the majors for 2010.
Salome was hitting .318 with six home runs in 68 games for Low-A West Virginia before he was suspended 50 games for violating the minor league substance abuse policy. He hit the ball well, but displayed very poor patience at the plate. His defense also took a turn for the worse during this season. Salome is still a solid catching prospect for the Brewers, but he'll need to do something to regain the luster in 2008.
Salome is the best catching prospect in the Milwaukee organization and one of the better catching prospects in the minors. The biggest knock against him is his size, which is 5-foot-7. Last season he hit .292 with 10 home runs and 31 doubles for Low-A West Virginia. The Brewers will move him High-A this season.
Salome had a breakout season in his first full year of pro ball. He was named MVP of the rookie-level Pioneer League for hitting .419 with eight home runs. He slowed down with a promotion to low-A West Virginia, but has great potential as a catcher.
