Returns on minor league pact
PSeattle Mariners
October 24, 2016
Mills re-signed with the Mariners on a minor league contract, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
Mills pitched exclusively with Triple-A Tacoma last season, although he put up an unimpressive 5.28 ERA in nine starts with the Rainiers. Until he starts keeping runs off the board in the minors, the left-hander is unlikely to see time with the Mariners.

Mills pitched his way into a trade after carving up the opposition at Triple-A Nashville to begin the season (9.2 K/9, 2.2 BB/9), when the Brewers didn't have room for him. The A's acquired him –- reportedly for $1 –- and gave him three turns in the rotation when injuries struck prior to their trades to add more viable options. When Oakland designated him for assignment in July, the Blue Jays claimed him, but he made just two more appearances in the big leagues after that point before getting outrighted to Buffalo. A 2007 fourth-round pick, Mills' days as a starter are likely nearing an end, which may ultimately give him second life as a reliever depending on how much velocity the role change adds to his high-80s fastball.
Mills has posted a solid strikeout rate (8.5 K/9IP) in parts of five minor league seasons but the command-and-control lefty hasn't been able to put things together against major league hitters just yet. He was traded to the Angels in the offseason for Jeff Mathis so perhaps his new organization will be able to squeeze something of value out of him.
Mills made a handful of forgettable appearances with the Jays but spent most of last year getting roughed up again at Triple-A Las Vegas. The soft-tossing lefty still managed a solid strikeout rate at Triple-A, but the more advanced hitters are squaring him up and making him pay for his mistakes. He'll need a lot of breaks this spring to win a rotation spot and is likely ticketed for another year at Triple-A as a result.
Mills got hammered in a pair of starts against the Phillies in his only action at the big league level, but took a step back at Triple-A in 14 starts before having his season cut short by a rib injury. He's a command and control guy despite some gaudy strikeout numbers in his minor league career and he wouldn't be the first of his kind to not survive the meat grinder. The Jays have some uncertainty at the back of their rotation, but Mills will need to separate himself from the herd this spring if he's to land a spot.
The minors are littered with guys like Mills: strike-throwing lefties without an abundance of pure stuff from established college programs. He put up solid numbers again, starting the season at Low-A Lansing and working himself up to Double-A New Hampshire. He's allowed just 129 hits and 58 walks with 180 strikeouts in 165.1 innings as a pro, but until he has a prolonged stretch at Double-A or above, there's no reason to get excited just yet. Not everyone like Jamie Moyer makes it through the meat grinder.
