2025 Fantasy Outlook
Dealt from San Diego to Miami at the 2024 trade deadline as part of the return for Tanner Scott and Bryan Hoeing, Mazur had a rocky run in his first taste of the big leagues, but there are reasons to expect better from him in 2025. He has some of the best command and control of any starting pitching prospect in the game, pacing all legitimate starting pitching prospects at Triple-A with a 4.9 percent walk rate, and he throws his fastball in the mid-90s. The 6-foot-2 righty throws three secondary offerings, although none of them are plus pitches, and when he's having success it's due to his ability to spot his fastball and then keep hitters off balance when he's ahead in the count. He logged a 1.19 WHIP and 3.92 FIP in 93.1 innings in the minors, with 13 of his 19 starts coming at Triple-A, and he should enter spring training with a chance to win a rotation spot on the stripped down Marlins. Mazur lacks a high ceiling, but he's a better bet to be a useful streamer in 2025 than his putrid MLB numbers from 2024 (7.49 ERA, 1.81 WHIP) suggest. Read Past Outlooks

Analysis

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Mazur checks a lot of boxes dynasty-league managers look for in pitching prospects. He throws a ton of strikes (walk rates below five percent at every stop) and has a full starter's pitch mix. Mazur was a projectable college starter when he was drafted out of Iowa in 2022, as he was 6-foot-2, 180 pounds and had room to put on good weight, and now Mazur's fastball sits at 95 mph. His changeup and slider will each flash plus, and if he continues on his current trajectory, he could surpass even a mid-rotation starter projection. The Padres all of a sudden have some rotation depth, with Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez waiting for opportunities, but Mazur seems like the most likely of the Padres' Double-A arms to reach the majors this summer.
