Returns to Twins
1BMinnesota Twins
January 25, 2018
Wilkins agreed to a minor-league deal with Minnesota on Thursday, Brandon Warne of The Athletic reports.
Wilkins joined the club last summer and appeared in 61 games for Double-A Chattanooga, slashing .254/.358/.474 with 12 home runs and 44 RBI. He may slide right back into his role with the Lookouts or return to the Triple-A level, where he's spent a majority of the past few years. In total, the 29-year-old has played in 43 big-league outings -- including 24 at-bats with the Brewers in 2016 -- but is unlikely to serve as much more than organizational depth moving forward.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
Wilkins had a busy offseason after the 2015 season, as he was a part of four different clubs at one point or another before the end of December. He finally stuck in the Brewers organization, spending most of the season with Triple-A Colorado Springs. The 28-year-old -- who had previously mashed 30 home runs in a season at Triple-A -- had a decent though underwhelming campaign in the minors in 2016, hitting 12 long balls with a .740 OPS. He went just 3-for-24 with 10 strikeouts in a brief major league stint toward the end of the season before hitting the open market during the winter. Though there is some intriguing upside in the power department, Wilkins should no longer really be considered a prospect and his room to grow as a player may be limited, so he will likely serve primarily as a depth option in the minor leagues wherever he lands.
After leading the International League in home runs in 2014, the White Sox lost Wilkins to waivers in spring training last year. He spent time with the Blue Jays and Dodgers organizations in 2015, but the Dodgers exposed him to waivers again in September and Baltimore snatched him up. He did not play a game at any level for the Orioles in 2015. Wilkins has spent about two and a half seasons at Triple-A with 55 home runs, but he struggled in the only 17 games of his MLB career with the White Sox in 2014. The Orioles saw Chris Davis enter free agency over the offseason and that leaves Wilkins and Christian Walker as internal candidates. The organization figures to sign or trade for a player, but if not Wilkins figures to get a shot at the job in spring training. Either way, he will compete for a bench spot at the minimum.
Wilkins led the International League with 30 home runs in 2014. He also contributed 38 doubles to achieve a career-best .265 ISO. Combine that power with Wilkins' plate discipline, and he could be an under-the-radar candidate for a roster spot on a Paul Konerko-less White Sox team.
