Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
A starter throughout his minor-league career, Kay broke summer camp on the Blue Jays' 30-man roster. He was expected to play a swingman role but ended up pitching exclusively out of the bullpen, making 13 appearances in relief before being optioned to the team's alternate training site in mid-September. Kay was never comfortable as a reliever, walking 14 while allowing three homers in 21 innings, though he did fan 22 batters. Toronto has opened its window to win and taken measures to strengthen the rotation, so Kay's future may be in a similar bullpen role, which doesn't lend itself to fantasy. To get back in the rotation mix, he needs to work on command and control, but with average stuff, his ceiling is capped as an innings eater. Kay is probably better off focusing on a couple offerings to maximize his effectiveness as a reliever.
A busy season for Kay saw him sent from the Mets to the Blue Jays in the Marcus Stroman trade in late July and later make his big-league debut in early September. He went on to allow nine runs with a 13:5 K:BB in 14 innings at the highest level. Prior to that, he'd posted a 2.96 ERA in 26 starts at the two highest levels of the minors, combining a good 24.1 K% with a fairly poor 10.0 BB%. Kay may have been traded for a big name, but he was seen as the safe big-league ready arm in the deal, while Simeon Woods Richardson was the high-upside piece the Blue Jays got back. The 6-foot lefty, who is entering his age-25 season, has average velocity and no standout secondaries. Still, the rebuilding Blue Jays figure to have plenty of starts available this season. Kay is unlikely to excel but could be a competent deep-league option if he holds down a rotation spot for most of the year.
