Signs minor-league deal with Yanks
Warren (elbow) signed a minor-league contract with the Yankees on Wednesday, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
ANALYSIS
Warren was designated for assignment by the Reds in mid November and he will now head to New York. In 39 appearances with the Reds in 2022, Warren produced an inflated 6.50 ERA and 1.64 WHIP with 40 strikeouts over 36 innings. The 29-year-old underwent surgery to repair a UCL injury in his throwing elbow in September and is unlikely to be ready for spring training as he recovers.

Warren spent 2020 at the Mariners' alternate site and then was designated for assignment (twice) at the conclusion of the season, before the Reds traded for him for cash. That investment in Warren paid off nicely for the Reds, as he posted a 1.29 ERA and 0.90 WHIP, with 34 strikeouts in 21 innings. Alas, the low inning count came because Warren missed two months with a severe oblique strain. Warren relies heavily upon his slider, throwing it nearly 60% of the time, with superb results - opposing hitters whiffed 46.6% against his slider while batting just .104 against it. The Reds will have openings to fill important roles in their bullpen in 2022, and Warren is a good candidate to get a chance to fill one of them, whether it's as a set-up guy or as a closer.
