Lands minor-league deal

December 11, 2020
Asuaje signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers on Friday, Alanna Rizzo of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports.
Analysis
Asuaje was released by the Cubs in May and failed to land with another organization during the 2020 season. However, he'll join the Dodgers heading into 2021, and he'll serve as a non-roster invitee during spring training. The 29-year-old spent the entire 2019 season with Triple-A Reno, slashing .239/.339/.403 with five home runs and 29 RBI, and he's likely to serve as organizational depth next year.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
2014
A secondary piece in the 2015 Craig Kimbrel trade, Asuaje has looked the part of a career backup in 96 career games with the Padres. He displayed good plate patience for his age last season, walking at an 8.2 percent clip with the big club and posting a 14.4 percent mark at Triple-A. He also hit line drives at a 23.9 percent clip, and if he continues to do that, Asuaje should be able to sustain a relatively high BABIP and acceptable batting average. Unfortunately, Asuaje packs little power (28.7 percent hard-hit rate) and his speed is modest. Without either of those two tools, Asuaje will struggle to find mixed-league relevance at any point. Making matters worse, Asuaje is limited defensively -- he's made fewer than a dozen appearances at other positions besides second base over the past two years. He figures to open 2018 behind Cory Spangenberg at the keystone.
Asuaje earned a cup of coffee with the Padres in September after an impressive performance in the Pacific Coast League with Triple-A El Paso, which garnered PCL Rookie of the Year honors. At 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds, Asuaje looks the part of a left-handed hitting utility player, but he spent most of his time with El Paso playing second base in 2016. El Paso has played as one of the most hitter-friendly environments in the PCL, but he hit six of his nine homers on the road last season while posting an OPS on the road (.864) that was 26 points above his home mark. Additionally, Asuaje improved against same-handed pitching, finishing with a .333/.404/.461 line (19:19 BB:K) against lefties compared to a .316/.366/.478 mark (30:63 BB:K) against righties. If he makes a quick adjustment to big league pitching, Asuaje's potential for double-digit homers and steals could lead him to regular playing time in 2017.
Asuaje, an 11th round draft pick in 2013, has been mostly a middle infielder, but has been introduced to third base and left field in 2014. He hit well in college with limited power and showed some on-base ability at Short Season Lowell in 2013. Will start at Low-A Greenville.
