Rest-of-Season Projections
Cut by Seattle
The Mariners released Gonzalez on Thursday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
The likelihood of MLB implementing extra roster spots for teams when the season resumes may have providing a slight boost to Gonzalez's chances of earning a spot with the Mariners, but the 34-year-old never looked to be a good fit on a rebuilding squad. Now released from his third team in just over a year, Gonzalez's time as a big-league player could be over.

Gonzalez spent time with the Cubs and Indians in 2019, but failed to find a role with either team and was designated for assignment twice in the span of five weeks. The 34-year-old recorded a career-low .572 OPS with just three home runs and 10 RBI in his major-league games last season. Gonzalez's struggles stemmed from an inability to put the bat to the ball, as his 16.7% swinging-strike rate and 77.0 Z-Contact% were both career-worst numbers and led to an untenable 31.3% K%. The left-handed hitter recorded a career-best 10.8 BB%, but in all he looked nothing like the CarGo of old in his first season outside of Colorado. Gonzalez's numbers declined sharply in 2019, and the fact that no team was willing to pick him up after his July 3 release was telling. It would be a surprise if he landed another major-league deal, and he may just be done in Major League Baseball altogether.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Hoping to play in 2020
Gonzalez intends to hold off retirement and resume his playing career in 2020, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Gonzalez has been out of work since early July, when he elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Cubs. It marked the second time he was dumped from a 40-man roster last season, as the Indians previously cut ties with him in May. Now 34 years old and coming off a season in which he slashed .200/.289/.283 across 166 plate appearances at the big-league level, Gonzalez would almost certainly have to settle for a minor-league deal if he's serious about keeping his career going. He would likely need a big spring training at the plate to claim an Opening Day roster spot with any team, as he offers little defensive value in the corner outfield at this stage of his career.
