Don Kelly

For the sixth consecutive season, Kelly was used as a utility man off the Tigers’ bench. The 35-year-old veteran hit .245/.332/.288 with 40 hits, seven RBI and six steals while appearing at seven different positions – first base, second base, third base, all three outfield spots, and designated hitter. Following the season, Kelly was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo, but he declined the assignment and chose to be a free agent instead. Signed by the Marlins to a minor league deal in January, Kelly faces an uphill battle to secure an Opening Day roster spot.

The do-it-all utility man once again managed to make over 100 appearances for the Tigers despite limited production at the plate. Kelly saw action at six different positions while logging 216 at-bats. He finished the season hitting .222/.309/.343 with six homers and 23 RBI. A favorite of ex-Tiger manager Jim Leyland, Kelly was often deployed when the team needed an extra left-handed bat in the lineup, or as a defensive replacement. Brad Ausmus has taken over for Leyland, and the Tigers will likely push Andy Dirks to the role of fourth outfielder, which will leave little playing time to spare for Kelly. The 34-year-old will likely have an opportunity to earn a bench role in spring training, but he’ll also be one of the first considerations to trim from the roster should some of the Tigers’ younger options make a push for playing time.

Kelly once again provided the Tigers with depth around the diamond in 2012, appearing at every position except shortstop and catcher. While his defensive versatility was certainly valued off the bench, Kelly failed to do much at the plate, finishing the year at .186/.276/.248 in 113 at-bats. The 33-year-old utility man's time with the Tigers appears to be over, but he'll try to catch on in a similar role for a new squad in 2013.

Kelly provided the Tigers with a versatile bat off the bench last season, appearing in 112 games while manning every position but second base and shortstop. The 32-year-old utility man hit .245/.291/.381 with seven home runs and 28 RBI in 257 at-bats. The Tigers will look to deploy Kelly as a jack-of-all-trades once again in 2012, but he could see some extra time at third base if the team doesn't bring in any help at the position during the offseason.

Kelly was a jack-of-all-trades off the Tigers' bench in 2010, spending time at every position but catcher, second base and shortstop. The Tigers' utility man finished the season hitting .244/.272/.374 with nine home runs and 27 RBI in 238 at-bats. The 31-year-old is expected to have a similar role with the team in 2011, but his playing time could see a dip if the Tigers stay relatively healthy.

Following an impressive 105-game stint with Triple-A Toledo in which he hit .331 with 27 stolen bases, Kelly earned a promotion to the Tigers last season. The 30-year-old utility man was used sparingly in 31 games, hitting .250/.311/.339 in 56 at-bats. Most of his time was seen as a defensive replacement late in games due to his ability to play all infield positions other than catcher and both corner outfield spots. Kelly doesn't factor into the Tigers' long-term plans and is unlikely to land a bigger role than he played last year.

Kelly will serve as a late inning defensive replacement for the Pirates. The Pittsburgh native hit led the team with 68 spring at-bats, batting .265.

The Tigers added Kelly to the 40-man roster this winter after he posted solid numbers between Double-A and Triple-A last season. He's probably not going to become a major league regular at 26, but Kelly looks like he could be a solid utility infielder.
